Daily marijuana use may raise risk of heart failure, large U.S. study finds

A new study from the U.S. has found that using marijuana every day may increase the risk of developing heart failure.

The research involved more than 150,000 adults and was part of the “All of Us” Research Program, a large effort to understand how different factors affect health.

The study was led by Dr. Yakubu Bene-Alhasan from Medstar Health in Baltimore. It followed 156,999 people who had no signs of heart failure when the study began. Each person answered a survey about their marijuana use and was monitored for almost four years on average.

The results were concerning. People who used marijuana daily were 34% more likely to develop heart failure than those who did not use it at all. This higher risk was seen in both men and women and did not depend on age or whether they smoked tobacco.

This is not the first time marijuana has been linked to heart problems. Other studies have suggested that marijuana use could increase the chances of developing conditions like coronary artery disease and irregular heartbeat, both of which can lead to heart failure.

This new study adds more evidence to the idea that regular marijuana use might be harmful to heart health.

One interesting part of the research looked at how marijuana might cause heart failure. The scientists found that coronary artery disease could be one way marijuana harms the heart. When they took this into account, the risk of heart failure from marijuana use dropped a little but was still significant.

Dr. Bene-Alhasan pointed out that more research is needed to fully understand how marijuana affects the heart. But the current results are enough to start raising awareness. These findings could help doctors better inform their patients and may even influence public health policies.

In this study, marijuana use included both recreational and medical use. For those using it for medical reasons, the study only counted use that went beyond what was prescribed. Most of the people in the study were middle-aged, and the group included individuals from different racial backgrounds.

However, the study did not look at how the marijuana was used — whether it was smoked, eaten, or used in another way — which might also affect the heart.

In short, the study shows that using marijuana every day might not be as harmless as many believe. It could increase the risk of serious heart problems like heart failure.

This is something people should be aware of, especially as marijuana becomes more widely used. More studies will help us learn even more about how this drug affects our long-term health.
