
After losing the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani, the former governor is attempting to rebrand his campaign with Gen Z slang and fiery social media attacks
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo is overhauling his image in a last-ditch effort to stop socialist Zohran Mamdani from becoming New York City’s next mayor. After a decisive 13-point loss in the Democratic primary, Cuomo is now running as an independent and adopting a new, aggressive social media persona.
Gone are the buttoned-up press releases. In their place are Gen Z slang, emojis, and a barrage of attacks aimed squarely at his 33-year-old rival.
Cuomo has challenged Mamdani to a “heavyweight bout” on X and questioned his opponent’s well-to-do background, calling him a “nepo baby” despite his own political lineage.

The strategy is a stark departure from Cuomo’s past campaigns, where he was always the frontrunner. Now, he’s the underdog, trailing Mamdani 44% to 25% in a recent Siena University poll.
Cuomo’s campaign has even gone so far as to attack Mamdani’s family ties to Uganda, a country with anti-LBGTQ+ laws.
The former governor, who once prided himself on his experience, is now trying to prove he’s the more “authentic” choice — a move that former Mayor Bill de Blasio has labeled “clinical” and “cynical.”

With his traditional political support and endorsements from wealthy backers dwindling, Cuomo is betting that a new, more combative persona can turn the tide. But as one strategist put it, “Once Superman’s lost his cape, it’s hard to get it back. In politics, no one likes a loser.”
