Cuban Woman in the U.S. Expresses Outrage Over Crime by Fellow Nationals: “I Would Hang My Head in Shame”

An American-based Cuban woman has taken to TikTok to express her outrage over a troubling incident involving five young Cuban nationals accused of committing murder during a robbery in Austin, Texas. The user, known as lizethika_opina, shared her emotional response, saying, “I would hang my head in shame seeing fellow Cubans from my homeland engaging in such actions here in the United States.” Her message resonated with many in the immigrant community.

In her heartfelt statement, she highlighted the arduous journey many undergo to reach the United States, navigating challenges like the treacherous Darién Gap or enduring years of family sacrifices, only to witness young people squandering the opportunities available in this country. “I wish I had arrived here at 17, 15, or 20… perhaps I’d own a boutique or be a renowned doctor by now. There are opportunities for young people here. The language is easier to learn, and there are growth paths. Why choose a life of crime?” she pondered sorrowfully.

The woman’s remarks followed the arrest of five Cubans in Texas for the murder of Miguel Mondragón, a 49-year-old man who was ambushed and shot on August 3 in Austin. The suspects, identified as Alejandro Hurtado-Reyes (22), Yanaris Reyes (29), Antonio González (17), Yurisander Góngora Rojas (19), and Héctor Yohany Achang Batlle (19), are facing capital murder charges. Police reports indicate they were part of a group targeting Hispanics, exploiting the fear of many immigrants about reporting crimes due to their immigration status.

The Mondragón family has called for justice and voiced concerns over the low bail amounts that could potentially release the suspects.

The TikToker emphasized how headlines involving Cubans in criminal activities cast a shadow over the entire immigrant community. “Stop making mistakes so immigrants and Cubans aren’t always under scrutiny. You hate deportation, yet you engage in these actions. So why the complaints?” she questioned with frustration.

Her plea echoes the sentiments of numerous migrants striving to build a life in the U.S., feeling that such incidents tarnish their collective image. “It is a disgrace, a heartache, because we know the struggle to get here. And because of a few, we all get blamed,” she concluded.
