A Chattanooga police sergeant was fired and arrested Wednesday after a Hamilton County grand jury indicted him on one count of aggravated assault.
Chattanooga Police Department Sgt. Worlie D. Johnson was investigated by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office at the request of city police after an incident near the intersection of Gunbarrel Road and Crane Road on Oct. 6, according to press releases from the police and sheriff’s departments.
When detectives closed the investigation, they presented the findings to a grand jury Tuesday, and an indictment was returned for one count of aggravated assault, the release said.
Johnson served in the Chattanooga Police Department’s Neighborhood Policing Bureau, but he is now relieved of all law enforcement duties. The department seized Johnson’s city-issued equipment and patrol vehicle, according to a police press release.
Johnson was arrested by Chattanooga police and booked into the Hamilton County Jail on Wednesday.
According to online court records, Johnson is out on bond and is due in court Oct. 24.
