Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is being forced to fork out thousands of pounds over the closure of a main leisure centre. Well documented ‘corrosion’ issues with the steel columns inside led to the Pingles Leisure Centre being closed back in January.
Works have been ongoing to fix the problems but it has led to further closures. This says Everyone Active, which runs the centre on behalf of the council, has led to a loss of income. New council papers revealed it has asked the local authority to foot the bill of the that loss to the tune of almost £200,000.
The council report states: “Due to a delay to works on site for remedying the steel columns at the Pingles Leisure Centre, there are loss of income claims for use of the swimming pool being received from the leisure centre operator.” The total is £196,000.

The cost forms part of the General Fund Budget Monitoring Quarter 22025/26 report that will be discussed by cabinet members at a meeting at the Town Hall tonight (December 3). CoventryLive has approached the council for a comment.
In the meantime, works continue on a huge £2m make-over which will bring new additions to the Pingles Leisure Centre as well as improve some of its existing features.
The learner pool, which has remained closed since the corrosion issues, is set to become what has been described as a new ‘water confidence paddling pool’ with interactive features. Major improvements are also being made to the leisure centre’s gym as well as the changing facilities and reception area.
