Thousands of workers and community members marched through Cape Town’s streets today as COSATU led a national Day of Action, presenting a sweeping set of demands to all three spheres of government. The federation warned that failure to address their concerns within 14 days would trigger intensified protests and further legal action.

Thousands of workers and community members marched through Cape Town’s streets today as COSATU led a national Day of Action, presenting a sweeping set of demands to all three spheres of government. The federation warned that failure to address their concerns within 14 days would trigger intensified protests and further legal action.

The coordinated protests, which coincided with the International Day for Decent Work, highlighted what the union describes as aindicate that memoranda were delivered to Parliament, the Premier’s office, and the City of Cape Town, outlining specific demands ranging from economic relief for households to stronger worker protections and anti-corruption measures. In its submissions, COSATU pointed to stark employment figures, noting that the unemployment rate has increased by over three million between 2017 and 2024. COSATU then called for an immediate stop to job losses, stricter application of worker protection laws, extended safeguards for temporary and freelance employees, and closing the wage gap between male and female workers. Specific to municipal services, the union demanded that the City of Cape Town implements an immediate, six-month pause on any planned price hikes for water, electricity, sanitation, and garbage collection services.They further proposed a new progressive tariff structure that shifts costs from poor households to big business and called for the doubling of amount of free water and electricity given to poor families who can’t afford to pay for these basic services. On broader social policy, COSATU pressed for expansion of social protection, including implementation ofThe federation also addressed governance issues, demanding a pro-poor review of the 2025/26 municipal budget that would prioritise housing, sanitation, transport, and job creation. This includes specific proposals for a R500 million township upgrade fund and 5,000 new EPWP jobs.cut diplomatic and trade ties with Israel and implement full Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions measures in support of Palestine.’
