Becky Swain’s return is set to cause problems in upcoming Coronation Street scenes as DI Costello finally gets involved in her return.
Those who follow the ITV soap have been waiting for the moment the two characters come face-to-face following Becky’s return from the dead last month.
As viewers know, Lisa Swain thought her wife had been dead for almost four years. So she was shocked when Becky turned up in the living room on their daughter, Betsy’s, 18th birthday, despite her devastated family thinking she had died in line of duty.
As an emotional Lisa was unable to figure out if what was happening was real, Becky explained that she had been in Spain under another name, having been put into witness protection, following an undercover operation gone wrong.
Struggling to believe Becky’s story, Lisa was seen confronting her boss, DI Costello, but he confirmed Becky’s version of events and claimed he was just trying to protect her by not telling her that Becky was in fact alive.
Becky has since been seen causing tension between Lisa and her new fiancée, Carla Connor, with the latter seemingly struggling with having her future wife’s former partner around.
In upcoming scenes, Corrie spoilers have revealed that Carla will voice her doubts, leaving Lisa to stand firm on her future with the Underworld factory boss.
It starts when Carla tells Lisa that she’s finally sold the Rovers Return to someone called Ben. But when Carla admits she’s having second thoughts about her trip to Ireland, as she doesn’t like to leave her alone with Becky.
Lisa questions Carla’s trust in her. But the detective sergeant assures Carla that she loves her and has no interest in Becky.
Later in the week, Betsy persuades Becky to model some of her designs for her college project and Lisa can’t help but smile as Becky struts around the lounge.
When Lisa joins in, an amused Betsy records the spectacle, uploading it to her socials. But the move throws Becky into panic and points out that people might recognise her.
Explaining the situation, Amy Cudden, who plays Becky, shared: “One of Becky’s strategies to soften Lisa and to ingratiate herself back into her family is to make them laugh. To clown for them and make them giggle, and to bring the lightness and the playfulness to the relationship.
“And it’s born out of that, they all let their guards down, they all have a really good laugh together, and Betsy innocently takes a video. It does put Becky in a certain amount of danger, but I also think that Becky isn’t above slightly manipulating her daughter into thinking that maybe she’s made a bigger problem than she actually has.
“I don’t think it’s great that Becky’s image is out there, it compromises her, but it’s also weirdly useful for her to be able to play on Betsy and Lisa’s guilt a bit. Her default action is to manipulate people; she plays the room that she’s in. And if there is a sense that people are feeling guilty for having dropped her in it then, no doubt, she is going to, some extent, take advantage of that.”
But things clearly spiral as the next we know is that having been out all night, DC Kit Green tells Lisa that Betsy’s been arrested.
Betsy sits alone in a police cell, tired and confused, while Lisa rails at Becky and tells her that Betsy’s been struggling ever since she showed up, leaving Becky stung.
At the station, an officer interviews Betsy and tells her that, according to DI Costello, she damaged a police car, resisted arrest and then tried to attack him.
Betsy refuses to comment but we soon see that Costello meets up with Becky and spells out that she needs to disappear again – or it will be worse for Betsy.
Speaking about Becky’s reaction to Costello’s threat, Amy explained: “There is a small, quiet voice in Becky’s head that’s saying, ‘Do you know what? You might have to step away, you might have to go and leave your family to get on without you,’ but I think Becky’s working really, really hard to ignore that voice.
“I think she thinks, ‘Yeah, okay, I might be getting them in a bit of danger, but I can also fix it.’ She’s got this absolute grandiose complex, ‘Yep, whatever trouble I cause, I can definitely get us out of it. I can fix everything because they’re my family.'”
