One person was injured in a wreck at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday in East End, but no one was killed as claimed by false reports that circulated afterwards on social media, police said Sunday afternoon.

The incident involved two vehicles, and one injured person was subsequently transported to the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Police Information Office.

“Another individual involved in the incident is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drug and was also taken to the hospital for assessment,” police said in a Sunday press release. “A full investigation into the circumstances of this accident is currently under way by the [Royal Virgin Islands Police Force].”

Police added that there “were no fatal hit-and-run accidents anywhere in the territory” overnight.

“The information being circulated to the contrary is completely false,” they said. “Spreading unconfirmed reports can cause unnecessary alarm and distress within our community.”

Police added that “official updates and verified information” are “always available” from their official press releases and verified social media accounts.

Another motor vehicle accident occurred shortly before noon on Sunday in the Hodges Creek “Junk Yard” area, police said in an earlier statement released at 12:59 p.m. the same day.

“One person has received injuries and has been transported to [the hospital] for treatment,” they said. “The extent of her injuries are unknown at this time.”

Police have not provided further updates on either incident.
