College Roundup: Westminster volleyball team sweeps Waynesburg

NEW WILMINGTON – Junior Liv Trent finished with eight kills on 18 attacks, hitting .278 for the Westminster College women’s volleyball team in a three-set victory over visiting Waynesburg Saturday evening on Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster improved to 13-9 overall and evened its PAC record at 5-5 with the conference victory, winning 25-11, 25-14 and 25-18. The Titans fought back from a 16-10 deficit in the third, scoring 13 of the next 14 points to grab a 23-17 lead. Westminster upped its record in straight-set matches this season to 9-3.

The College is celebrating 50 years of Westminster Volleyball throughout its Homecoming and Reunion Weekend and welcomed back nearly 40 players representing every era of competition on Saturday.

In addition to her eight kills, Trent added three digs and four service aces. Sophomore Morgan O’Brien chipped in with seven kills on 10 swings (.700) and added eight assists, three digs and three aces. Seniors Rachel LaSalvia and Shelby Rambo finished with six kills each. Senior Angie Nardone totaled 13 assists and four digs while freshman Mackenzie Ging finished with nine digs and four aces.

Larissa Howe and Kristina Zadronzny led Wayesburg with seven kills apiece.

Westminster will travel to Geneva (4-19, 1-9 PAC) for a pivotal PAC North matchup on Wednesday. The opening serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Westminster College women’s cross country team participated in Oberlin’s Inter-Regional Rumble Saturday morning.

Case Western Reserve claimed the team title at the 25-team, six-kilometer event, finishing with 76 points. John Carroll was second with 90 points and Centre was third with 129 points. Westminster was 24th with 719 points.

Washington & Jefferson’s Claire Anderson won the individual title after posting a time of 21 minutes, 17.80 seconds. Geneva’s Haley Carroll (21:46.0) was the runner-up.

Senior Monica Curtis finished 127th with a time of 25:32.0 and freshman Gabby Armlin was 155th with a time of 26:05.04. Freshman Abigail Perrine (Grove City High) was 189th (27:56.50), freshman Callie Reaugh finished 194th (28:24.10) and junior Madison Mamula finished 209th (31:03.00).

Westminster will compete at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships on Saturday, Nov. 1. The six-kilometer championship, scheduled to get underway at 12 p.m., will be held at Allegheny’s Robertson Athletic Complex in Meadville.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Westminster College men’s cross country team competed at Oberlin’s Inter-Regional Rumble Saturday morning.

Case Western Reserve claimed the team title at the 26-team, eight-kilometer event, finishing with 84 points. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was second with 95 points and Kenyon was third with 109. Westminster finished 26th with 800 points.

Case Western Reserve’s Jacob Slater won the individual title with a time of 25 minutes, 14.4 seconds. John Carroll’s Ian Paul (25:32.5) was runner-up.

Freshman Nick Bender was 146th with a time of 28.20 seconds while junior Dalton Koehler finished 176th (28:51.7). Freshman Phillip Silvis was 205th (29:55.50) and senior Justin Redilla was 220th (31:54.90). Freshman Dillon Brunner was 221st (33:08.20), freshman Nate Gannoe was 222nd (33:16.10) and junior Dennis Jones (West Middlesex High) was 223rd (33:30.90).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

LATROBE, Pa. – The Westminster College women’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) loss at Saint Vincent Saturday evening at UPMC Field.

Westminster fell to 1-9-4 overall and 1-5-2 in the league. It was the program’s sixth 1-0 defeat this season. Saint Vincent improved to 12-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the PAC.

Saint Vincent’s Emma Koller’s goal in the 37th minute proved to be the game-winning goal for the Bearcats. Her score was assisted by Cori Bieber. Saturday’s goal was Koller’s 11th of the year and third game-winner this season.

Senior Morgan Murphy finished with seven saves for Westminster.

Saint Vincent outshot Westminster 12-6 and finished with an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Bearcats attempted eight corner kicks while the Titans managed two.

Westminster will travel to Greenville and Alumni Stadium at Stoeber Field Wednesday for a 5 p.m. matchup with Thiel (0-14, 0-8 PAC). It is scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m.

GROVE CITY

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

GROVE CITY – The Grove City College women’s volleyball team picked up its first Presidents’ Athletic Conference sweep of the season Saturday afternoon by securing a 25-8, 25-22, 25-17 victory over visiting Saint Vincent in conference interdivisional play at the Grove City College Arena.

Junior Sarah Hart helped lead Grove City’s balanced offensive attack with 11 kills on 21 attacks. Junior Kendra Klusch posted nine kills while classmate Alayna Dorst tossed in eight kills.

Junior Lily Lagaras added seven kills on 14 attempts.

Junior setter Sarah Harris helped direct the offense with 18 assists. Sophomore Brooke Manfull totaled 14 assists. Manfull also served a match-high three aces. Dorst and Harris both served two aces.

Klusch paced the defense with six blocks. Hart chalked up four blocks while Dorst and sophomore Lilly Pool each had three blocks. Dorst delivered a team-leading 14 digs. Harris and sophomore Lilly Wojtala each contributed nine digs.

Saturday’s match marked the lone regular season meeting between PAC North Division member Grove City (12-6, 5-5) and South Division entrant Saint Vincent (5-11, 4-6 PAC). Grove City returns to its double round-robin North Division schedule Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. match at Thiel.
