
Cold storage owners are going to hold a two-day international potato exhibition for the first time to increase the multiple uses, proper storage, processing and export of surplus potatoes.
The exhibition titled ‘Potato Festival-2025’ will be held at the capital’s International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) from December 12 to 13. This information was revealed by Bangladesh Cold Storage Association (BCSA).
The country produced 13 million tonnes of potatoes in 2024-25 season, which is 4 million tonnes more than the demand. Farmers are facing financial losses due to lack of proper utilization of excess potatoes. They are selling it for Tk 25 per kg, including cold storage costs, against production cost of Tk 12 to Tk 13.
BCSA said the exhibition looks forward to create new business opportunities. Mutual cooperation in the industry will increase the potential for potato export at international levels, besides the demand at the national level.
International market demands and quality control rules will be familiarize using the fair. High-yielding potatoes, climate-tolerant cultivation methods and organic techniques of potato cultivation will be on display.
Moreover, modern cold storage, solar-powered storage models and packaging technology will familiarize to keep potatoes in good condition for a long time, automation, robotics and blockchain in supply chain management will also familia rize to farmers and multiple users.
For the first time, the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Agriculture, BCSA, Bangladesh Agro-Processors Association (BAPA) and other partner organizations are collaborating in this event.
BCSA President Mustafa Azad Chowdhury said potatoes are not just a vegetable; rather, it is an important component of industry and exports. Creating awareness about this is one of the objectives of the exhibition.
In addition, there will be a combination of modern technology and equipment at all stages from potato production, harvesting and packaging. The exhibition will establish commercial relations between farmers, exporters and entrepreneurs in the processing industry, technology suppliers and foreign buyers.
