Canadian crypto users just got a major upgrade. Coinbase has deepened its partnership with PayPal, now allowing users in Canada to buy and sell cryptocurrencies directly using their PayPal accounts.
The feature is already live, giving millions of Canadians easier access to digital assets through one of the country’s most trusted payment platforms.
Coinbase officially entered the Canadian market in 2023 and has since grown rapidly. Now, with PayPal onboard, the process of funding Coinbase accounts or cashing out crypto just became as easy as clicking a button. This move mirrors a similar integration that launched recently for users in the U.S.
With over 10 million active PayPal users in Canada, the new integration is expected to significantly lower the barrier to entry for people interested in cryptocurrencies. It’s part of a broader trend that sees fintech leaders blending traditional payment rails with the fast-evolving world of digital currencies.
The partnership also arrives at a time when PayPal is ramping up its crypto strategy. The company recently revealed it now supports merchant acceptance for over 100 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. The ability to convert crypto to fiat using PayPal’s stablecoin infrastructure further positions it as a bridge between legacy finance and Web3.
“We’re making it seamless for Canadians to move between fiat and crypto,” said John Froese, SVP at PayPal. “This collaboration with Coinbase brings more people into the digital economy, with the trust and ease that PayPal is known for.”
The announcement follows a series of initiatives from both companies to accelerate mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies in North America. With Coinbase providing the trading infrastructure and PayPal offering a familiar payments layer, the alliance could set a new standard for retail crypto accessibility in Canada.
