Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN), a leading U.S.-listed cryptocurrency exchange, is advancing its vision of merging stablecoin payments with artificial intelligence (AI). Earlier this year, the company introduced x402, an open-source protocol enabling instant stablecoin transactions across websites. Now, Coinbase has unveiled x402 Bazaar, a discovery layer designed for AI agents, described as a “Google for agents.”
The goal is to enable agentic commerce, where AI agents act on behalf of users by shopping, collecting data, or subscribing to services. Erik Reppel, head of engineering at Coinbase Developer Platform, highlighted the concept of “pay-per-crawl” — a system allowing AI agents to pay for access to data or content through stablecoin micropayments. This model could replace traditional scraping with fair, instant payments, creating a new digital economy.
Coinbase envisions AI agents purchasing far more than humans typically would, from live market data and stock price feeds to AI-generated art and real-time sports updates. According to Reppel, any digital service or media could integrate with x402 to offer on-demand access and instant payment.
Early projects joining the ecosystem include Prixe, a stock price API that allows AI agents to generate real-time financial reports, along with various AI-powered image and video generation tools. These services showcase how x402 can streamline automated workflows, making it easier for AI systems to transact independently.
As more platforms adopt the protocol, Coinbase expects x402 Bazaar to expand rapidly, fueling a marketplace where stablecoins, blockchain technology, and AI automation intersect. This innovation highlights Coinbase’s commitment to shaping the next era of digital commerce, where autonomous AI agents and crypto payments converge to create new economic opportunities.
