[OSEN=Son Chan-ik Reporter] Chungcheongbuk-do Province is pushing forward with the construction of a ‘Chungcheongbuk-do-style multipurpose dome stadium’ to represent the Chungcheong region.
Governor Kim Young-hwan of Chungcheongbuk-do publicly expressed his determination to build the dome stadium, emphasizing, “Oseong is the optimal candidate site.” In line with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s announcement of a national project plan for a 50,000-seat dome stadium, the province has swiftly responded.
The province explained that, with its regional status elevated due to expanded investment attraction and improved economic indicators since the launch of the eighth civil election term, expanding cultural and sports infrastructure is no longer a task that can be postponed. Residents have had to travel to Seoul or Daejeon to watch professional sports games and large-scale performances, which has been analyzed as limiting cultural opportunities for the younger generation and weakening settlement conditions.
As the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recently reviewed the national promotion of a 50,000-seat dome stadium, Chungcheongbuk-do Province set a goal to build a large-scale multipurpose dome stadium centered in Oseong. The dome stadium is expected to be developed as a complex space that can host large-scale events year-round, including professional baseball, international sports events, K-POP concerts, and exhibitions.
Currently, the Chungcheongbuk-do Development Corporation is conducting a ‘basic planning and feasibility study for the Chungcheongbuk-do-style dome stadium,’ which is scheduled to be completed in February 2026. The study includes location, scale, operational model, funding, and economic effects. Based on the study results, the province plans to collaborate with Cheongju City and Sejong City to finalize a roadmap for a metropolitan-scale dome stadium in the Chungcheong region.
The promotion strategy is a two-track approach. While linking government policies to secure national funding, the province will also pursue its own independent plans in parallel to ensure the project’s speed. Oseong is a transportation hub with concentrated KTX, international airport, and highway networks, forming a two-hour living zone with the metropolitan area, Sejong, and Daejeon, which also gives it high location competitiveness.
The province will form a ‘Pan-Citizen Dome Stadium Construction Promotion Committee’ and establish an organization co-operated by the governor and a civilian chairperson. Internally, a task force will review the scale, funding, and economic effects, while collaborating with Cheongju City and Sejong City to ensure metropolitan usability.
Governor Kim Young-hwan stated, “The dome stadium is a future-oriented infrastructure that will enhance the region’s cultural, tourism, and industrial competitiveness,” adding, “We will create a dome stadium at the national level that the Chungcheong region can share.”
