Campaigners still waiting for cash to reopen swimming pool

Campaigners fighting to restore their local swimming pool have been left frustrated that the council budget did not include direct funding to allow reopening.

Whitehill Pool has been closed since 2019 and has suffered a series of setbacks, leaving its doors closed.

Local people protested outside the City Chambers as the council set the budget for 2026/27.

At the meeting, it was approved that the revenue budget for the pool is reallocated to other services.

“Officers continue to work on a viable plan for opening and once this is presented and approved the full revenue budget will be returned to Whitehill Pool to support its reopening and ongoing operation.”

Bill Stark, of Save Whitehill Pool Campaign Group, said: “Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council remain fully committed to supporting our cause. They have worked with the Campaign to prepare the Business Case required to support our desired outcome, one of these two options.

“But we are now looking at a cost of around £35m.

“This level of Capital Funding will not be available until the new funding cycle, which begins in 2028/29.

“In the meantime, a lot of work will be required to source this amount of money.

“However, we need a small amount of investment now to secure the site.”

“We are here to maintain Campaign visibility.

“We are much further away from achieving our original goal – 7 years on.

Living Rent Denniston members also protested outside the meeting and were angry that no money for reopening was identified.

Susan Carden, Member of Living Rent Dennistoun, said: “The council’s failure to include Whitehill Pool in their budget is an insult to Dennistoun residents, as our beloved community sports facility remains closed with no signs of reopening.

“Time and again the people in Dennistoun are being left behind.

“We know the impact of councils cutting health and leisure facilities and we’re seeing it in real time in Dennistoun.

“Kids can’t learn to swim, people are being hit harder by loneliness and our health is getting worse.”
