KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 10): The government is allocating nearly RM220 million to strengthen the role of Parliament next year.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said an additional RM5 million is being set aside to further empower the functions of the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat Special Select Committees as a check-and-balance mechanism to government policies.
“To date, the people in 143 parliamentary constituencies have benefited from sustainability programmes initiated by the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM). A total of RM15 million is being allocated to expand the coverage to more constituencies,” he said when tabling Budget 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Meanwhile, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the separation of the roles of the attorney-general and the public prosecutor is currently at the stakeholder engagement stage.
He said the Law Reform Task Force established by the government is reviewing comprehensive reforms to criminal and contract laws, including the drafting of new Admiralty Jurisdiction and Coroners Bills.
“Following the enactment of the Consumer Credit Act, the government will amend the Consumer Protection Act to incorporate elements of the lemon law to safeguard the rights of consumers who are often disadvantaged,” he said. – Bernama
