A 44-year-old Broome man has been charged with animal cruelty after the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals WA seized his allegedly “emaciated” dogs earlier this year.
RSPCA WA inspectors seized the man’s six-year-old great dane and nine-year-old pomeranian in March after a cruelty complaint led them to the man’s home.
According to officers, both dogs appeared to be underweight, which was later confirmed by a vet who also diagnosed the dogs with dental disease among other illnesses.
The man had received warnings about the great dane’s condition before, and was directed by RSPCA WA to provide sufficient food and take the dog to his local vet clinic once a week for four weeks so updates could be provided on the dog’s condition.
Both dogs are now in foster care, and their condition continues to improve, according to RSPCA WA.
The man has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty and two counts of failing to comply with a direction from an RSPCA WA inspector.
He is due to appear in Broome Magistrates Court on August 18.
