A British secondary school teacher and his partner have been charged in connection with the horrific rape and murder of a 13-month-old boy they were in the process of adopting.
Jamie Varley, 32, and John McGowan-Fazakerley, 30, appeared at Preston Crown Court on Monday, June 16, nearly two years after the infant, Preston Davey, was pronounced dead at Blackpool Victoria Hospital in 2023. Both men were initially arrested but later released on bail before Lancashire Police re-arrested and charged them following further investigations.
Varley, previously employed as a teacher, has been suspended since 2023 by the Cidari Multi Academy Trust, which oversees his former school. A spokesperson confirmed he has been barred from school premises and contact with students or staff. The trust stated it is “considering its position” regarding his employment but confirmed he remains on full pay, as legally required during suspension. In line with the case, Varley faces multiple charges, including murder, two counts of assault by penetration of a male child under 13, and five counts of child cruelty. He is also accused of taking indecent photographs, distributing an explicit image and possessing extreme pornography involving the victim. Meanwhile, McGowan-Fazakerley has been charged with causing or allowing the death of a child, sexual assault of a child and two counts of child cruelty. Authorities confirmed all charges relate to the same victim.
Judge Robert Altham set a trial date for April 14, 2026. He acknowledged the delay, but stated it was necessary to ensure all expert witnesses were prepared. Both defendants were remanded into custody and will remain in prison until a plea hearing in October.
