British Boy, 6, Arrested in Mauritius Drug Trafficking Operation
A 6-year-old British boy was recently apprehended in Mauritius, along with several adults, in connection with a major drug trafficking operation. The incident, involving approximately £1.6 million (Rs 18.78 crore) worth of cannabis, unfolded at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), the island nation’s primary air gateway.
Authorities reportedly discovered 161 kilograms of cannabis concealed within the group’s luggage. Reports indicate that 14 kilograms of the substance were found in 24 packages within the child’s luggage. his 35-year-old mother allegedly carried 29 packages, while her Romanian companion was found with 32 packages.
The estimated street value of the seized drugs is substantial in the regional market. In total, five British women, one British man, one Romanian man, and the child were detained. The adults have since appeared in a Mahebourg court, facing provisional charges related to the drug role they allegedly played.
According to the Mauritian newspaper Defi Media, authorities opposed the adults’ release, and they remain in custody. The British High Commission was alerted to the situation following the arrests of the child and his mother.Subsequent reports in the UK media indicated the child returned home Wednesday, where his father met him at the airport.
The Foreign Office confirmed they are providing support to several British nationals detained in Mauritius and are in contact with local authorities regarding the international drug case.
Customs and police officials had been monitoring the group since their arrival on a British Airways flight from London Gatwick Airport.
