Bridgerton Season 4: Will Kate and Anthony return? Here’s what role they play in Benedict and Sophie’s story in the books

Bridgerton Season 4: Although the new season centres on Benedict Bridgerton’s romance with Sophie Beckett, fans are especially eager to see whether Season 2 favourites Kate Sharma and Anthony Bridgerton will return.

As anticipation builds for Bridgerton Season 4, fans are eager to see how Netflix’s Regency-era drama balances its new central romance with the continuing journeys of established couples. While the upcoming season shifts focus to Benedict Bridgerton’s love story with Sophie Beckett, viewers are particularly curious about the return of Season 2 favourites Kate Sharma and Anthony Bridgerton.

The absence of Kate (Simone Ashley) and Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) from early promotional material, including the Season 4 trailer and masquerade ball stills, sparked speculation about the scale of their involvement. However, clues from Julia Quinn’s novels offer insight into what role the Viscount and Viscountess Bridgerton may play.

Season 4 adapts An Offer From a Gentleman, the third novel in Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series, which centres on Benedict Bridgerton’s Cinderella-inspired romance with Sophie. While the Netflix adaptation has frequently altered timelines and character prominence, the core of the story remains Benedict’s emotional evolution and romantic awakening.

With Benedict moving to the forefront, other couples naturally recede into supporting roles. This narrative shift explains why Kate and Anthony are not expected to dominate the season’s storyline.

In An Offer From a Gentleman, the iconic masquerade ball plays a pivotal role in Benedict’s story. According to Julia Quinn, Kate and Anthony do not attend the event in the novel because they are travelling in India at the time, as mentioned in a report by Swoon.

Quinn recently reiterated this detail on social media, noting that the couple remains abroad while the rest of the Bridgerton family participates in the masquerade. This aligns with the show’s Season 3 arc, which saw Kate and Anthony depart for India as they prepare for parenthood and reconnect with Kate’s roots.

In the novel, Anthony and Kate are expecting their first child during the events surrounding Benedict and Sophie’s romance. Violet Bridgerton decides to relinquish Bridgerton House, passing it on to Anthony, Kate and their growing family.

Although they attend Violet’s farewell masquerade ball in the book, their presence is limited. Their son, Edmund, is born shortly after, followed by another son, Miles, about a year later. Beyond these milestones, Anthony appears only briefly, including a short family interaction involving Benedict and Sophie.

Kate, meanwhile, remains largely off-page, reflecting the book’s clear focus on Benedict’s journey rather than on established couples, as mentioned in a report by Swoon.

While the source material limits Kate and Anthony’s involvement, the Netflix adaptation has a history of expanding roles beyond the books. Previous seasons gave increased narrative weight to side characters and reordered romantic arcs, most notably by advancing Colin and Penelope’s story earlier than in the novels.

Jonathan Bailey has confirmed in interviews that he filmed wedding scenes during Season 4 production, suggesting Anthony’s presence during major family moments. Whether these scenes involve Benedict and Sophie or another Bridgerton sibling remains undisclosed.

There is also speculation that the show may depict Kate and Anthony’s life in India, offering glimpses into their early married life and new parenthood, a storyline largely absent from the books.

With Bridgerton Season 4 split into two parts, the series faces the challenge of maintaining continuity for long-time fans while allowing Benedict’s romance to take centre stage. Kate and Anthony’s reduced role reflects the structure of Julia Quinn’s novels, but the show’s track record suggests they will still feature meaningfully, even if briefly.

Their presence may serve more as emotional continuity than plot propulsion, reinforcing the family dynamics that define the series.

Netflix has confirmed that Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1 will premiere on January 29, 2026, followed by Part 2 on February 26, 2026. Both instalments are expected to continue the show’s tradition of lavish production design and ensemble storytelling

Yes, both characters are confirmed to appear, though their roles are expected to be limited.

In Julia Quinn’s book, the couple is in India during the event, which explains their absence.
