NAIDOC Week is here and the South West is gearing up to celebrate the history, heritage and the oldest continuing living culture on the planet.
As part of the NAIDOC Week celebrations, the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre will continue its partnership with Alcoa for the next three years through Alcoa’s Community Partnership Program.
As part of the partnership, BREC will screen First Nations documentary Like my Brother on Tuesday, July 8 with doors opening at 5.30pm.
The documentary follows four Tiwi Island Indigenous girls who dreamt of AFLW stardom and pursuing the dream with the support of their community.
The story is used to inspire the future generations, aligning with the NAIDOC Week theme of 2025, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.
BREC executive director Fiona de Garis said she was pleased with Alcoa’s support again.
“With this new partnership we will be introducing two interconnected initiatives designed to increase First Nations participation in the arts and create more culturally safe and welcoming experiences at BREC for Noongar communities across the South West,” she said.
“Through co-funding from CircuitWest and the Alcoa First Nations Focus Program, we are announcing our first elder in residence, with the appointment of renowned actor, director, and cultural leader Dr Lynette Narkle for a 12-month term.”
Dr Narkle recently stepped off the BREC board after six years and said, “with so many young Noongars ready to step up and lead, we must leave room for the next generation to share our stories, traditional and contemporary, as well as new strategies for the future that will make a real difference for our community”.
Along with BREC’s celebrations other local governments are hosting their own NAIDOC events, with the City of Busselton and Shire of Waroona both hosting flag raising ceremonies on Monday morning.
Busselton will host a NAIDOC disco for primary school aged children on Wednesday and a cultural activity day on Thursday.
Waroona will have a Noongar storytelling on Tuesday morning hosted by local elders and sports and art activities on Wednesday at Waroona Town Oval and town hall.
