Victory enables blocking impeachment, vetoing opposition proposals
The ruling Liberal Advance Party (LLA) is projected to secure a decisive victory in Argentina’s midterm parliamentary elections held on the 26th. This election served as a “midterm evaluation” of the free-market reforms and stringent austerity policies pursued by President Javier Milei’s government, which took office in December 2023. As a result, the Milei administration is expected to gain strong momentum to continue advancing its reforms.
According to local media outlet *Buenos Aires Herald*, the Liberal Advance Party recorded 40.8% of the vote with 91% of ballots counted nationwide. In this election, 127 out of 257 seats in the lower house and 24 out of 72 seats in the upper house are set to be renewed. Based on these results, the Liberal Advance Party is likely to stably secure one-third of the lower house seats. This would enable the party to block presidential impeachment attempts and exercise veto power over opposition legislative proposals. The outcome effectively establishes a political foundation to support the Milei government’s policies. Currently, the Liberal Advance Party holds 40 seats in the lower house and 7 seats in the upper house.
