
Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) will hold its 26th convocation on Tuesday (September 30). The event will be attended by Governor and Chancellor of the University Jishnu Dev Varma, who will confer Ph.D. degrees, gold medals, and book prizes.
Uma Kanjilal, Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University, will deliver the convocation address as the chief guest. Prof. Ghanta Chakrapani, Vice-Chancellor of BRAOU, announced that the university will confer honorary Doctor of Letters degrees on Telugu lyricist and poet Goreti Venkanna, and peace educator Prem Rawat, recognising their distinguished contributions to literature and global social welfare.
A total of 60,288 candidates from the 2023-24 academic year will graduate, including 35,346 undergraduates and 24,942 postgraduates, diploma, and certificate holders. Among them, 32,373 are women and seven are transgender learners. Notably, 203 prison inmates will receive degrees, with two securing gold medals.
The convocation will see the distribution of 86 gold medals, with 35 awarded in undergraduate programmes and 51 in postgraduate programmes. Additionally, 53 Ph.D. scholars and two M.Phil candidates will receive research degrees.
BRAOU has awarded over 5.9 lakh degrees since its inception in 1982-83 and continues to promote inclusive education. The university provides opportunities for prisoners, tribals, women, transgender individuals, persons with disabilities, and military personnel through specially designed programmes. All certificates from this convocation will be issued using blockchain technology to ensure security and authenticity.
