Bosses at a popular Edinburgh city centre cocktail bar have announced it will close its doors after 17 years.
Under The Stairs is situated on Merchant Street, tucked underneath George IV Bridge in the heart of the Old Town.
In a heartfelt post on social media, the team revealed they are set to “hang up [their] bar towels and seek new adventures”.
Their last night open on Saturday, November 1, will be marked with a special send-off event.
The management thanked everybody who has visited, worked for, or been involved with the bar over the years, and made memories for them.
They wrote on Instagram: “After 17yrs we’ve (finally) decided to hang up our bar towels and seek new adventures…
“The biggest heartfelt thanks to all our customers, suppliers, DJs, friends and family who continuously supported us through highs and lows, tears and laughter, new menus and New Years’ celebrations for almost 2 decades. It’s been some journey.
“Our incredible staff – just wow, you put up with us for so long! Not to mention the relentless festival chaos year after year.
“We’re forever grateful for your efforts in that kitchen inferno, last minute shift covers, late nights and “team meetings”. How lucky we’ve been to work with you and become friends beyond these walls.
“Everyone made Under the Stairs a special little place and we leave with years of fond memories.”
Over 100 people, former employees and fellow local businesses posted comments sharing their disappointment and personal memories of the bar.

They looked back on memorable shifts, visiting during the busy Fringe season, and late-night celebrations. One even thanked the staff for hosting their wedding during lockdown.
On November 1, the kitchen is set to stay open later, with a live DJ playing a 90s set from 10pm onwards. The bar promised “super scran and one last dance around the tables”.
They revealed that pop-culture themed cocktail bar Cocktail Geeks, which has a premises in East Market Street, are set to move in, and wished them luck in their new venture.
