Book Review: Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective

Nothing hits me in the nostalgia quite like the original Metroid Prime. I first played it with my brother on Christmas Day in 2002, huddled in my tiny bedroom at my parents’ house. For the first time during the GameCube era, I remember being completely blown away by the visuals. From the opening cutscene where Samus escapes from the massive Meta Ridley to the unforgettable battle against the massive plant creature Flaahgra, every moment felt jam-packed with detail and purpose. And for the first time in that console generation, it truly felt like we had stepped into a new era of gaming.

I remember thinking about how far ahead of the curve Retro Studios really was. Their dedication to the source material and their incredible art direction didn’t just impress me, it turned me into a lifelong Metroid fan (and collector).

So here we are, 23 years after the launch of the first Metroid Prime and just over 30 days away from the long-awaited fourth installment in the series. At long last, we’ve been given something I’ve dreamed about for most of my adult life: an in-depth art book dedicated entirely to Metroid.

This isn’t just any art book. It’s a stunning, premium quality coffee table collection that celebrates one of Nintendo’s most atmospheric and visually rich franchises. Created in collaboration with Retro Studios and Nintendo, the book packs more than 200 pages of stunning concept art, developer interviews, and a detailed look at the enemies, locations, power-ups, ships, and suits that defined the first three games.

The first thing you’ll notice when flipping through the pages is a heartfelt foreword from Metroid Prime Producer Kensuke Tanabe. It reads like a love letter to longtime fans, but Tanabe’s voice echoes throughout the book as well. Scattered among the artwork are dozens of “Producer’s Notes,” offering fascinating insights into the creative process, from why certain design choices were made to which ideas were reworked or abandoned entirely.

One section about Metroid Prime: Remastered even reveals that the team initially planned to create brand-new cutscenes and went as far as producing several “impressive” prototypes. Those scenes were ultimately scrapped to preserve the original GameCube atmosphere. It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes detail that makes the Metroid fan in me absolutely giddy. And trust me, this book is full of those little gems that fans are going to love digging into.

I had an absolute blast paging through this art book, and if you’re any kind of Metroid fan, I’m confident you will too. Every page feels like a trip back through time, a reminder of the creativity and care that went into this franchise. It’s not just a collection of artwork, it’s a celebration of everything that made Metroid Prime so special. The attention to detail, the insight from the developers, the incredible concept art — it all comes together in a way that transported me right back to my childhood bedroom over twenty years ago, playing the series for the very first time.

Whether you’ve been a fan since the GameCube days or you’re just now discovering the series, this retrospective is a love letter to the universe that Retro Studios and Nintendo built! It’s the kind of book that reminds you why you fell in love with Metroid in the first place.

You can snag a pre-order for Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective at Amazon. The book releases on October 28th.
