AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation after reviewing some body camera footage from a few days ago.
The said “the actions of two deputies did not meet the high standards and expectations established under Sheriff Brantley’s administration.”
The footage was recorded on the evening of Dec. 16, when the agency executed multiple search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation in Augusta.
News 12 confirmed that it happened during the arrest of DeAnte Cannon as deputies executed search warrants targeting the Youngins With Money gang.
A photo of him with a bloody face, apparently a screen shot from a deputy’s body camera, has been posted on social media.
The image includes the words “Axon body,” the brand of body camera worn by Richmond County deputies.
Cannon’s arrest mugshot seems tp show marks and dried blood consistent with the bloody image from social media, although his face doesn’t appear swollen.
Search warrants were executed at 2353 Henry Circle in Augusta, 1425 Feldspar Court in Augusta, and 1012 Candleberry Drive in Grovetown.
Investigators seized about 30 pounds of marijuana, methamphetamine, multiple gang-related items and $211,166 in cash.
The footage in question was recorded during the execution of one of those warrants, the agency said Friday.
“As part of our routine internal auditing process, supervisors regularly review body worn camera footage,” the agency said. “Through that review, concerns were identified, and a formal internal investigation has been initiated.”
Investigators are reviewing additional footage and will conduct interviews with all involved parties to ensure a thorough and fair assessment of the incident, the agency said.
“This process is necessary to gather all facts and ensure accountability,” the agency said.
“The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is committed to professionalism, transparency, and maintaining the trust of our community. Once the investigation is completed, which is anticipated by the first part of next week, we will share our findings with our media partners and the public.”
