After leaving GoDaddy a year ago, Bob Mountain will now head business development at D3.
A year after leaving the domain name industry, Bob Mountain is back.
D3 announced today that Mountain has joined the firm as Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer.
Mountain will oversee business development, sales, partnerships, and partner operations for the company.
D3 is bringing blockchain technology to domain names, working with domain name registrants to tokenize domain names. Tokenization occurs through participating domain registrars; the largest registrar to sign on so far is IONOS.
Among the added functionality, D3 enables domain owners to fractionalize their domain names, allowing people to buy and sell tokens in domains such as brag.com and software.ai.
The company also plans to apply for top level domain names in this year’s ICANN new top level domain name program.
Mountain entered the industry with NameMedia, which owned Afternic and sold it to GoDaddy. He was the Chief Revenue Officer for Afternic at GoDaddy and later became Vice President of Global Strategic Partnerships at the registrar. He left GoDaddy in December 2024.
While at Afternic, Mountain was instrumental in building out the distribution network with domain name registrars. This experience should come in handy at D3 as it expands its network of participating registrars.
