AN ALLEGED member of the Mongrels gang apparently turned the gun on himself rather than being arrested by police.

These were the findings of an investigation by Independent Police Investigate Directorate (Ipid) following a shootout between the Mongrels and the No Fears gangs in Schaapkraal on Monday afternoon.

Ottery and surrounds have become a warzone in the escalating feud between the two gangs, which turned deadly at the weekend.

Police confirmed that on Saturday, alleged Mongrels dik ding Ameerodien Du Plooy died in hospital after being shot in the face following an attack on No Fears. His alleged rival Keanan America also died as a result of his injuries.

The Mongrels then launched a revenge attack on Monday.

According to Daily Voice sources, two skollies from the No Fears gang were shot at, including the alleged leader Dino Josephs.

As they returned gunfire, things took a turn when cops attached to the Flying Squad in Schaapkraal arrived on the scene and gave chase as the Mongrels fled in Toyota Rumion.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the shooting incident at the corner of 4th Avenue and Schaapkraal Road, on Monday afternoon, 6 October 2025, at about 4.35pm.

Cops gave chase and when they hit Govan Mbeki Drive, three occupants got out of the vehicle and fled on foot before being arrested.

When returning to the car, cops found the body of another man in backseat.

And according to Ipid, Zepie Hosea Raats, 23, shot himself rather than being taken alive.

Ipid spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said: “It is alleged that on Monday 6 October at around 4pm, a shootout between rival gangs occurred in Ottery where a person was fatally wounded and two others injured.

“Suspects allegedly fled from the scene in a white Toyota Rumion and the Flying squad gave chase.

“Suspects tried to flee the scene on foot and the police gave chase. Suspects allegedly fired at the police and police returned fire shooting one of the assailants in the leg.

“During interviews with the suspects, it was mentioned that police shot and killed the deceased.”

“The crime scene was processed and during intensive investigation on the scene it was discovered through video footage that the deceased struggled to get out of the vehicle to flee, and he subsequently turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head.”

Ipid has done preliminary investigations and the case has been taken over by the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) for investigation.
