BlackRock’s BUIDL Pays $100M in On-Chain Dividends, Cementing RWA Momentum

The payout strengthens the real-world asset (RWA) investment narrative

The tokenized money market fund, BUIDL, by BlackRock, is officially overpaid dividends to the tune of 100 million dollars and is now officially the largest tokenized U.S. Treasury offering. The X breaking update was announced by the account dedicated to RWA, which has the name of RWAwatchlist, and the attention of investors who monitor institutional blockchain adoption was immediately attracted. The post is heavily visualized, with the pictures of Larry Fink and BUIDL branding being used to highlight the importance of the milestone. This disbursement substantiates that tokenized conventional finance is able to yield real and steady on-chain yield.

In March 2024, BlackRock issued BUIDL on Ethereum as a tokenized money market security, a U.S. Treasury security. The fund operates as a channel to the on-chain token holders through the yields of short-term government debt. As a company, BUIDL manages over half a billion dollars and its holdings yield an average of about 5% a year distributed openly via blockchain-based systems. Contrary to the speculative returns of DeFi, BUIDL bonds are associated with real-world cash flows.

The news caused a significant buzz in the crypto community, with tens of responses featuring corresponding RWA tokens and protocols. BUIDL is viewed by investors as an indication that giant institutions are now confident that regulated financial products can be executed at scale with the help of public blockchains. The participation of BlackRock brings some credibility that smaller crypto-native projects could not accomplish by themselves. This change is an indicator that RWAs can no longer be in theory but they have come into actual production.

Blockchain projects such as Tokenized Treasuries like BUIDL show how blockchain technology can be used to evolve traditional finance without ignoring regulatory bodies. RWAs have structural benefits over traditional systems due to on-chain dividend payouts, immediate settlement and open accounting. BlackRock has already estimated that the process of tokenization would release trillions of dollars of assets in the long run. The BUIDL $100M payout has provided the RWA sector with physical evidence that this shift has already started.
