When you visit Guaiquerí Empanadas, you’ll get more than just delicious food, you’ll learn about a culture through food.
“I hope customers feel they are not just eating a meal, but sharing in culture and tradition. I want them to leave full, happy and curious about Venezuela, knowing that food can tell a story and bring people together,” shares owner Omarlys Fernandez.
Her empanada food truck and pop-up was born during the pandemic with the hope of sharing her Venezuelan culture with Hawaii’s community of many cultures. Through the business, she also pays tribute to her ancestors and Guaiquerí people from the indigenous tribe of Margarita Island, Venezuela.
Fernandez serves authentic Venezuelan food that include items like arepas, empanadas, tres leches cake and chicha. The most popular menu items are the arepa reina pepiada, pabellón empanada and seafood cocktail Margartia Island style.
With a rotating menu, be sure to order a few of every option. The chicken with cream cheese ($8) and blackbeans with cheese ($7) empanadas are perfect for a mix of flavors. If you want to keep things simple, try the chorizo ($8), cheese ($7) or beef empanada ($9). And don’t be in a rush, enjoy everything Guaiquerí has to offer at the beautifully covered dining space at Fisherman’s Wharf. With numerous tables and umbrellas, it’s the perfect setting for an outdoor food truck picnic.
Being able to share her indigenous roots and connecting with people are some of Fernandez’s favorite things about the business.
“You’re not just buying food, you’re celebrating indigenous culture, family recipes and community,” she says. “We’d love to welcome you and share a little taste of Venezuela with Hawaii.”
