Lab will create new research-backed and technology-enabled tools for the next generation of Americans

ARLINGTON, VA, UNITED STATES, March 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Bill of Rights Institute, a national leader in civics and history education for more than 25 years, announced today the launch of its new Civics Innovation Lab, on the eve of Civic Learning Week March 9-13.

The Civics Innovation Lab will develop, test, and deploy new instructional strategies, interactive and participatory design processes, and advanced technologies, such as AI-enhanced tools, to increase teacher support, improve student achievement, and equip the next generation with the knowledge and skills to practice civics in their daily lives. The first set of tools will be released in time for America’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.

The Institute will host events that bring together civic leaders, educators, technologists, and investors to build a community of civic practice around the Lab. The first events are at SXSW EDU in Austin, TX and at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle, WA on April 30.

“America’s founding principles are enduring,” Bill of Rights Institute President and CEO David Bobb said. “The Civics Innovation Lab will give young people the tools they need to ensure that the American Experiment will succeed for another 250 years.”

Already the Institute has raised nearly $5 million for the first phase of the Lab’s operation. By leveraging the Institute’s philanthropic and programmatic partnerships, the Civics Innovation Lab will transform how educators and students experience civics in school, in communities, and across culture.

The Lab is the next chapter in the Institute’s proven record of innovation, which has created trusted content and provided professional development to teachers nationwide. A leading publisher of open educational resources (OER), the Institute offers more than 6,000 no-cost digital resources and supports a network of more than 90,000 teachers who reach 9 million students per year.

The Institute has long worked to disrupt the civic education market, which is dominated by expensive, outmoded textbooks that often go unused by teachers.

The Lab will scale the Institute’s ability to lead an overhaul of the traditional civics model, replacing outdated textbooks with dynamic, direct-to-user content, tools, and skills development to meet the needs of today’s learners and make civics more accessible and meaningful to them.

It will also support teachers with safe, ethical, and effective use of technology to help focus principled thinking and engagement among students.

The Lab will develop strategies to improve how students learn our nation’s civic principles and how to put those ideas into practice, equipping them with lifelong skills that will serve them personally and professionally, and strengthening our workforce, communities, and democratic institutions.

“The need for civics is all around us,” Bobb emphasized. “As we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, the launch of the Civics Innovation Lab will help young Americans connect to the nation’s core principles and see that our future together is bright.”

The Bill of Rights Institute is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that teaches civics and history through market-leading curricula and educational programs for teachers and students.
