Instead of reacting online or giving interviews, the 73-year-old stayed focused, visiting prospects and preparing for year two with North Carolina, as if nothing unusual had happened.
Around the football world, however, the reaction was anything but calm, as fans, analysts, and former players questioned how one of the sport’s most decorated coaches was left out.
“If he’s not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there’s really no coach that should ever be a first-ballot Hall of Famer,” Brady said, expressing disbelief at the snub. “He’s incredible, “There’s no coach I’d rather play for. If I’m picking one coach to go out there to win a Super Bowl – give me one season – I’m taking Bill Belichick.”
Reports indicated Belichick failed to receive the required 40 votes from the 50-person panel, and was informed privately by the Hall of Fame days before the news surfaced.
The official Class of 2026 will be announced at NFL Honors in San Francisco on February 5, and insiders believe Belichick may choose not to attend.
When voters consider Belichick’s résumé, they see 333 combined wins, three Coach of the Year awards, and eight Super Bowl rings, yet they also see a career marked by controversy.
Spygate remains the most significant blemish, dating back to 2007, when the Patriots were caught filming New York Jets coaches from prohibited sideline locations.
Commissioner Roger Goodell ruled the act was a deliberate attempt to bypass league rules, leading to the largest fine ever imposed on an NFL coach at the time.
Belichick was fined $500,000, the Patriots lost draft capital, and the league ordered all related tapes and notes to be surrendered for investigation.
League officials later destroyed the tapes, preventing full review, which fueled criticism that the scope of the operation was never properly examined.
Belichick maintained he believed he was within the rules, as long as recordings were not used during the same game, though many critics remained unconvinced.
Whistleblowers and former staff members later alleged that illegal filming occurred for years, including reports of recording the Rams’ walkthrough before Super Bowl XXXVI.
While Belichick denied those claims, former video assistant Matt Walsh provided tapes that confirmed prolonged signal-recording practices between 2000 and 2002.
For some voters, these issues may still complicate how they evaluate his legacy, even against unmatched success and sustained dominance.
