Indian H-1B visa holders are facing growing uncertainty as visa stamping delays, which began in December 2025, have now extended into 2027. Many applicants report that their scheduled interviews are being repeatedly postponed, with no new slots opening.
The crisis started when hundreds of H-1B workers traveled to India for visa stamping, only to be informed that their appointments were deferred to 2026 after US consulates began enhanced social media screening. Since then, the situation has worsened. Applicants who had interviews planned for early 2026 are now being rescheduled for April-May 2027.
Frustrated applicants have taken to social media to share their experiences. One Reddit user said their February 2026 appointment in Chennai was moved to May 2027. Others reported similar delays, with some calling the situation an “H-1B / H-4 Visa Interview Deadlock in India.” While emergency or expedited slots exist, most families cannot use them without a regular appointment.
The delays are affecting families and livelihoods. Many H-1B workers who traveled for stamping are now stranded in India. Spouses and children face separation, children miss school, and some workers risk losing jobs or income. The uncertainty is causing both emotional and financial stress. Experts warn that the lack of a clear timeline is the biggest challenge, as consulates report that interview slots are “reduced,” but in reality, they are almost unavailable.
The delays are linked to new US rules that introduced mandatory social media checks for employment-based visas starting December 15, 2025. Each check adds roughly 30 minutes to an application, cutting the number of interviews consulates can process daily.
Immigration experts advise H-1B workers currently in the US to avoid traveling to India until the situation improves.
