Labor faithful to discuss total fracking ban in WA at upcoming conference in Fremantle

The Labor faithful will discuss banning fracking in all parts of WA at a state conference meeting in Fremantle on Saturday.

The Sunday Times understands a WA Labor policy group has recommended extending the current fracking ban from 98 per cent of the state — to 100 per cent.

Fracking, where drilling is used to fracture the ground and release trapped gas, is banned across the state — but areas in the Kimberley and the Mid-West are exempt.

Despite the exemptions, there is currently no fracking in the Kimberley.

The WA Labor Government in 2018 lifted a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing (fracking) but promised 98 per cent of the state would remain frack free.

The current ban prohibits fracking in the Perth metropolitan area, South West areas as well as around Broome and on the Dampier Peninsula in the Kimberley and in national parks.

In recent times, WA Premier Roger Cook has stood firm behind the government’s policies on fracking, saying they were balanced and responsible.

“This is a balanced and responsible policy that supports economic development, new jobs, environmental protection and landowner rights,” Mr Cook said.

Next weekend’s Labor state conference is the first since the party had an emphatic win in the March state Election – winning 46 out of 59 seats in the Legislative Assembly.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is not expected to attend, but it is understood he will be visiting WA later this month.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles will instead be addressing the party faithful at Saturday’s state conference.

“An independent scientific inquiry led by former EPA chair Dr Hatton recommended hydraulic fracture stimulation can occur with the appropriate regulations in place,” a state government spokesperson said on Saturday.

“The report included 44 recommendations, including consent provisions for private landowners and traditional owners. The Government is now implementing the recommendations.

“Importantly, fracking is still not allowed in 98 per cent of our State – including in the Perth, Peel and South.”
