Former Dublin GAA player Bernard Brogan shared fond memories of his mother Maria’s unwavering support and sideline antics during his playing career, including a hilarious anecdote involving an umbrella and a rival player. His brothers also reminisced about their parents’ dedication and the next generation’s involvement in the sport.
Former Dublin GAA player Bernard Brogan has shared a lovely story about his mam Maria. Maria, who is originally from Kerry, met her husband Bernard Brogan Sr while he was working in the Kingdom. The family settled in Dublin, and Bernard Sr and their three sons, Alan, Paul and Bernard Jr all played for Dublin GAA and won All Ireland medals.
‘She was well known across all side-lines, she actually got very nervous at times and aggressive at times,’ Bernard Jr said on the Late Late Show. ‘She used to walk the back of the pitch and the back of the stadium. She got to know all the stewards,’ he said. He then told a hilarious story about one particularly memorable match. ‘It was a rival game, I was getting a few clips off a lad. She came on the pitch one day with an umbrella, trying to clip him. I was trying to hold her back, she would have gotten a dig off the fella who was hitting me,’ he joked. He said both Maria and Bernard Sr always supported him and his brothers Alan and Paul, although there was never any pressure to play GAA. Alan went on to say that both of his parents had a 10 year ticket, but their mam was so nervous she couldn’t watch them play. ‘Mam and dad actually had ten year tickets when we were playing. My mam used to watch the first five or ten minutes and then she’d be gone, so she got no use out of them. She’d have been better off watching it at home, it was nerve at times. ‘In those days we were losing more of those matches than we were winning them unfortunately,’ Alan added. Paul poked fun at his stint on Dancing With The Stars, saying he was now known for his dancing moves as well as his football skills, joking that he wasn’t sure that was such a good thing. The next generation of GAA players will be the Brogan’s children, with Alan explaining that they all play the sport. ‘They are playing. We have five boys between us and Bernard has a little girl, Aifric. They are all playing, lots of sports. I will take it like my own ma and da, there won’t be too much pressure on them .’ Bernard Sr said it would mean the world to see his grandchildren play for their county, adding that he hoped he’d live long enough to see them play at that level.
