An increasing number of independent watch brands are gaining recognition for their fresh take on traditional design, with one particular model generating discussion for its appearance. The McQ: Salmon watch is now available for £445 on Detrash’s website.
Featuring a slender case, gently hued dial and refined detailing, it shares similarities with the type of dress watches typically linked to established Swiss manufacturers like Patek, such as the £40,000 Calatrava 6196P-001 watch. The McQ watch takes its name from Steve McQueen, as the design’s inspiration came from Steve’s own Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox that he wore in The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), according to the website.
From that foundation, they explained they incorporated some Gerald Genta-inspired twisted lugs from the Universal Geneve Polerouter, ‘a few design cues from the Patek Philippe Calatrava’, some colour and, crucially, certain details crafted from recycled materials. The watch has a crisp, traditional design that feels recognisable without being ostentatious, reports the Mirror.

Its slender profile (8mm), well-proportioned dimensions and uncluttered dial (38mm diameter) lend it a subtly enduring aesthetic that suits both casual daily wear and more formal attire. Rather than depending on striking details or prominent branding, the emphasis is on simplicity and readability, making it effortless to wear.
The materials demonstrate a practical, contemporary approach to how the timepiece is constructed. For instance, The McQ: Salmon’s case is made from 80% recycled surgical-grade steel, according to the brand, keeping it light on the wrist whilst still feeling robust and long-lasting.
It’s combined with a BeerSkin strap, a vegan leather created using brewing by-products, which has a supple, worn-in feel from the first wear and sits comfortably without rigidity. Manufacturing is intentionally kept limited, with each timepiece individually numbered to prevent the impression of mass production. Overall, it provides a no-nonsense interpretation of a timeless watch design, blending understated styling, sensible material selections and a more thoughtful manufacturing approach.
Alternatively, customers could consider the exclusive Citizen Sport Eco-Drive Chronograph Black Dial and Stainless Steel Watch for £349 from H Samuel. This timepiece is said to possess a ‘sporty appearance and feel’, and it is designed with a stainless steel case and bracelet, plus a black dial featuring luminous hands and markers.
For gold-toned options, look to Ernest Jones, where this Rotary Heritage Men’s Watch is available for £169. Set beneath a mineral glass crystal, the crisp white dial is accented by black Roman numerals.
The Detrash McQ: Salmon watch has received glowing reviews, with one customer stating: “Well and truly over the elitism of the luxury brands and have just sold two Swiss watches and replaced them with a handful of less expensive models. The Detrash McQ is far and away the standout piece of my new collection. An absolute stunner to look at and a build quality that makes a mockery of the supposedly high end brands and all this with my social conscience intact, too. What’s not to love?”
Another customer penned: “A very attractive watch that can be worn with casual or smart clothing. Very comfortable strap with an accurate movement. A really good concept!”
A third buyer remarked: “I got number 60 for my 60th birthday. It’s a really classy dress watch that is nicely made and I love the environmental aspect.”
Whilst there were no negative reviews on Detrash itself, on Trustpilot one customer mentioned: “My only niggle was the spamming asking for reviews – when I’d emailed to say I couldn’t give a review until the gift had been opened!”
Another customer shared: “I now have three Detrash watches, a Cali – melting Ice Cap Blue, an Au,M.G and I’ve just got myself an McQ: Salmon. Believe me when I tell you that these watches are the real deal. I am so pleased with my purchases. Thank you Detrash!”
