BBC Breakfast’s sports presenter Olly Foster shared some sombre news on Sunday’s programme. After co-hosts Ben Thompson and Rachel Burden passed the baton to Olly for the latest sports updates, he honoured two sporting greats.
He started off by saying, “Now, for just a couple of hours, Manchester City were top yesterday. That’s the first time they’ve been there since the opening day of the season. They won two-one at Nottingham Forest in the lunchtime kick-off.
“Before the match began, tributes were paid to the Forest club legend John Robertson, their two-time European Cup winner, who died on Christmas Day.”
Olly continued, “That makes it eight wins in a row in all competitions.”
The BBC presenter then reported on Liverpool’s game against Wolves at Anfield, which was the first encounter between the teams since the passing of Diogo Jota, reports the Express.
He added, “So there was an emotional afternoon at Anfield as Liverpool and Wolves met for the first time since the death of Diogo Jota in the summer.
“Jota played for both clubs during his eight years in England. His sons were mascots for the game. They came out onto the pitch with the local captain.
“Jota was 28 when he was killed in a car crash in Spain in July, alongside his brother Andre Silva, and Liverpool went on to win the match.”
Saturday’s BBC Breakfast was also charged with emotion as Charlie Stayt and Emma Vardy delivered the latest news headlines.
The show’s hosts kicked off the programme with some heart-wrenching news following the disappearance of two swimmers during a Christmas Day swim in East Devon.
Charlie started, “Good morning, Saturday, the 27th of December. Our main story today is that tributes are being paid to one of the two men who are missing off the East Devon coast, with his family saying he was deeply loved and will be forever missed.
“Police have called off the search for 63-year-old Matthew Upham and another man in his 40s who were among a number of people who got into difficulty in the sea during a Christmas Day swim in Budleigh Salterton,” Emma chimed in.
