Dan Ballard and Granit Xhaka both took to social media to thank Sunderland supporters after the Black Cats’ hard-fought 0-0 draw away at Brighton & Hove Albion, as Régis Le Bris’ side continued their impressive start to life back in the Premier League.
In a game that marked the first-ever Premier League meeting between the two clubs, Sunderland produced another disciplined defensive display to earn a valuable point on the road, extending a strong run of results that has seen them emerge from a demanding sequence of fixtures in good shape.
Captain Granit Xhaka was once again central to Sunderland’s performance at the Amex Stadium, leading from the front in midfield as the visitors limited Brighton to very little in open play. Shortly after full-time, the Switzerland international shared a message on Instagram reflecting both the performance and the mindset inside the dressing room. “Good game, great fight, point gained on the road. Eyes already on what’s next,” Xhaka wrote, accompanied by a clenched-fist emoji and his #GX34 tag.
The post was met with a strong response from supporters, with thousands of likes and comments praising the captain’s influence and leadership, as Sunderland continued to show maturity well beyond their newly promoted status.
At the other end of the pitch, Dan Ballard was again outstanding as part of a resolute back line that secured another Premier League clean sheet. The centre-back won a series of important aerial duels and played a key role in repelling Brighton’s pressure during a more demanding second half. Ballard also used social media to acknowledge the travelling Sunderland fans, posting: “Clean sheet and a point on the road,” before adding: “Thanks for the travelling support @sunderlandafc” followed by a red heart emoji.

The draw came after a game low on clear chances, with Sunderland arguably the sharper side before the interval. Brian Brobbey and Chris Rigg were unable to fully capitalise on moments of hesitation in Brighton’s defensive line, while goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was required to produce a sharp save to deny Omar Alderete’s powerful header after the break. Romaine Mundle also tested the Brighton keeper with a driven effort from distance.
Brighton improved territorially as the match wore on, but found Sunderland difficult to break down, often reduced to speculative efforts from range as Le Bris’ side held their shape well and managed the contest intelligently. The result leaves Sunderland with 27 points from 17 games, an outstanding return that underlines how effectively they have navigated a challenging stretch that included fixtures against Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Brighton. It also continues a sequence of performances that has seen the Black Cats combine organisation, resilience and belief.

As the messages from Xhaka and Ballard showed, there was pride in the performance – but also a clear sense of focus on what comes next, with Sunderland refusing to get carried away as they head into the festive period firmly establishing themselves in the Premier League once again.
