Range has signed writer-director Nick Rowland, hot off the news that Lionsgate acquired his highly anticipated upcoming film “She Rides Shotgun” from Fifth Season, in a deal brokered by Fifth Season and Range Select.
Directed by Rowland and based on Jordan Harper’s novel of the same name, the explosive action-thriller starring Taron Egerton alongside Ana Sophia Heger, Rob Yang and John Carroll Lynch will be released in a limited theatrical run on Aug. 1.
Rowland’s debut feature, “Calm With Horses,” produced by Michael Fassbender’s DMC Film and Film4 and starring Cosmo Jarvis and Barry Keoghan, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019 and was released the following year to critical acclaim, earning 10 BIFA nominations including Best Director, and 4 BAFTA nominations including Outstanding British Film.
Up next, Rowland has several high-profile directorial projects in development including “The Final Score,” reteaming him with Makeready and Fifth Season, who are producing the original screenplay by Will Hettinger, after a competitive acquisition of the crime thriller spec as well as an untitled film being produced and financed by Waypoint.
A graduate of the National Film and Television School (NFTS), Rowland’s award-winning shorts have screened internationally at festivals such as Sundance and Edinburgh. His critically acclaimed early work includes “Out of Sight,” a Grand Jury nominee at Sundance; “Group B,” a Student Oscar nominee; and “Slap,” which was nominated for both a BAFTA and BIFA.
Before moving into film, Rowland had a successful career as a rally driver. His passion for dynamic, character-driven storytelling carried over into his television work, which includes directing episodes of “Ripper Street” (BBC/Amazon) and the TV movie “Floodlights” (BBC).
