Backyard & Beyond, a family-run business specializing in sheds and custom tiny homes, celebrated its ribbon-cutting Monday, Sept. 29, at its home base in London.
CEO James Adams spoke at the ceremony, highlighting the company’s journey from its beginnings in the shed industry in 2018 to its current role as a leader in custom-built outdoor structures.
“We started in the shed industry several years ago, and we’ve done our own manufacturing, sales, delivery and set-up for the last little over two years now,” Adams said.
The company partners with local Amish builders to construct sheds and tiny homes, supplying all materials from nails and paint to wood flooring. Deliveries and set-up are handled by Adams’ middle son Isaac, who has been hauling and installing buildings since high school. Isaac’s older brother, Isaiah, serves as operations manager — ensuring daily functions run smoothly — while the youngest, Micah, handles sales.
Adams highlighted the team’s focus on customer experience and customization.
“Our motto here is to enjoy the experience,” he said. “If it’s a good experience from beginning to end, you’re likely to recommend that place of business or go back. We want everyone to enjoy the experience — because if you enjoy the experience, you’re going to love the product.”
Backyard & Beyond has found a growing market for its custom tiny homes and Airbnb-ready structures, which offer affordable housing alternatives at a fraction of traditional home costs.
“There’s a lot of room in these,” Adams noted, referencing a 16’x44′ model on display. “These have become a very popular way to get people on their own property for a minimum investment.”
The business has also adapted to changes in the market, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“COVID gave a lot more exposure to outdoor structures at home because people were at home,” Adams said. “We’ve seen a huge transition from just storage into live-in structures.”
Though Backyard & Beyond has expanded into other states — with locations in Alabama and Washington, and a Virginia site awaiting permits — Adams stressed the importance of family and community roots.
“My faith and my family are my central focus,” he said. “The reason we’re in Alabama is because that’s where my childhood best friend lives, and I want him to have the same opportunity down there as I have here. The same with Virginia — a very close friend is in that area, and I want to give him the same opportunity… We’re expanding to help our extended family and friends.”
Isaiah Adams added, “We’re excited about being a part of the community, and we’re very excited about the growth and the expansion.”
