Axis Communications has during the summer acquired Skysense, a Swedish company that develops systems for monitoring and managing aviation-related threats, primarily through anti-drone technology.
Skysense, founded in 2015 by Robby de Candido and Magnus Lundmark, delivers tracking equipment for drones. The main product in Skysense’s offering is the Skysense Counter-UAS, a drone and pilot tracking sensor that provides security personnel with airspace protection. The system can detect and 3D-position drones at a distance of up to two kilometers and can also locate the pilot. While the system’s name may be unfamiliar to many in the security industry, the brand Validrone is better known.
The Validrone anti-drone system
For several years, Skysense has collaborated with system integrator Stanley Security, which was acquired by Securitas and became Securitas Technology. This collaboration resulted in Stanley Security launching and marketing an anti-drone system under its own brand, Validrone, as early as 2019.
High global growth
The market for anti-drone technology has not yet fully taken off, but as the drone threat becomes increasingly apparent – not least due to recent intrusions at Danish and Norwegian airports – interest in these systems is rapidly growing.
Based on an average annual growth rate of 26.5 percent, the global market for anti-drone technology is projected to grow from USD 4.48 billion in 2025 to USD 14.51 billion in 2030, according to a report from market analysis firm MarketsandMarkets.
Increased demand for airspace security
The acquisition has not been officially communicated by either Axis Communications or Skysense, but Björn Hallerborn, Manager Corporate Communications at Axis Communications, provided an answer when asked why the Swedish world leader in network video surveillance cameras chose to acquire Skysense:
“We are seeing increased demand for airspace surveillance, and Skysense’s anti-drone technology is a good fit with our other product offerings,” he commented.
Skysense reported in its latest financial statement (December 2024) a turnover of about SEK 7.5 million.
