Astar Network has taken a significant step forward by activating Asynchronous Backing on its mainnet this June, according to astar.network. This technical upgrade aims to enhance the network’s performance, responsiveness, and scalability, marking a pivotal development in Astar’s infrastructure without altering its core economic logic.
Originally introduced in Polkadot’s Relay Chain, Asynchronous Backing enables parachains to separate block production and validation, allowing these processes to occur simultaneously. This results in a more efficient pipeline, reducing block times, increasing throughput, and enhancing the overall experience for developers and users. The block time has been reduced from 12 seconds to approximately 6 seconds, doubling the number of blocks produced annually while maintaining the current inflation levels by halving ASTR emissions per block.
The activation of Asynchronous Backing means a more scalable and efficient system, doubling transaction throughput and reducing latency. This upgrade supports more complex transactions and larger data payloads by producing parablocks every 6 seconds, with up to 2 seconds available for execution. This change unlocks greater flexibility for builders, ensuring a seamless upgrade with no disruptions to users or developer tools.
The upgrade offers faster block production, higher throughput, and improved user experiences for decentralized applications (dApps). It supports real-time applications such as payments, trading platforms, social tools, and on-chain games, allowing builders to design more interactive and lower-latency products. By enabling multiple parachain blocks to be in different validation stages simultaneously, the network can process more transactions and messages efficiently.
Asynchronous Backing positions Astar as a high-performance network crucial for scaling to accommodate higher user volumes, complex dApps, and emerging use cases in areas like gaming and DeFi. This upgrade maintains consistency in staking logic, governance periods, and the token’s inflation schedule. Developers are encouraged to adapt their off-chain systems to the new block production cadence.
Having been tested on Shiden and validated internally, the governance vote to activate Asynchronous Backing on Astar has successfully passed. Developers are encouraged to explore and build on async-enabled environments like Shibuya, ensuring a forward-looking investment in Astar’s ecosystem.
