The Aspen Institute is now seeking applicants for its William Randolph Hearst Fellowship. This prestigious program connects students with hands-on experience in philanthropy and social innovation. Applications are being accepted for the 2026 cohort across fall, spring, and summer terms. This opportunity is designed to cultivate the next generation of diverse nonprofit leadership. The fellowship provides a paid internship with the Institute’s Program on Philanthropy and Social Innovation in Washington, D.C.

The fellowship is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. It is awarded based on a combination of academic excellence and demonstrated financial need. Selected Hearst Fellows will work directly with the Philanthropy and Social Innovation leadership team.According to the Aspen Institute, fall and spring fellows commit 15 to 20 hours per week. The role offers an hourly pay range of $18 to $19. Fellows can choose to work remotely or from the Aspen Institute’s Washington, D.C. office. This flexibility allows students from across the country to participate. The core mission is to expose students to the critical issues facing the social sector. This includes philanthropy, nonprofit management, and social enterprise. Participants can often arrange for academic credit through their home institutions.

Ideal candidates are highly motivated students with a strong academic record. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a higher education institution. Summer applicants must provide proof of enrollment for the following fall semester. All candidates must be authorized to work lawfully in the United States. The application requires a resume and a detailed cover letter. The cover letter is a crucial component. It should address the candidate’s interest in the social sector and their research and writing skills. Applicants must also explain their financial need and unique personal perspectives. Those selected for interviews will need to provide additional documents. This includes an unofficial transcript and a writing sample. At least one letter of recommendation from a professor or supervisor is also mandatory. The Aspen Institute program aims to inform and maximize the impact of organizations working for social good.
