Aston Kutcher says his dashing looks have gotten in the way of his acting career.
The 47-year-old star — who cemented a place in Hollywood with his comedic roles — said he lost opportunities due to his appearance.
While promoting his forthcoming FX television series The Beauty at New York Comic Con this month, he shared, ‘I think every role you get, part of it is what you look like, right?’
Ashton — who recently attended Sydney Sweeney’s birthday party — explained, ‘It’s a very big part of what you’re imbuing as the character. And so, there are roles that I’ve gotten because of the way I look and there are roles that I haven’t gotten because of the way I look.’
According to an account from People, he added, ‘Sometimes it’s frustrating.’
But as a producer, the filmmaker said he understands: ‘You’re trying to tell a story with pictures, and the pictures need to create a feeling for the audience.’

The Comic Con panel Ashton spoke on was moderated by Ryan Murphy, the creator of his new FX series.
Co-stars Rebecca Hall, Evan Peters, Anthony Ramos, and Jeremy Pope were also part of the conversation.

Teasing the show — which debuts in January — the Dude, Where’s My Car? star shared, ‘Without giving away too much, almost every one of us has an incredibly nuanced role where, in some way, shape or form, we’re playing something that we are or we aren’t at any given time.’
He continued, ‘It creates this underlying ability to embody insecurities that you may have, that you hide away and you push down, and you don’t let anyone in the world see it.’
The Beauty has been adapted from the comic book series of the same name by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley.
A summary of the comic reads: ‘Modern society is obsessed with outward beauty. What if there was a way to guarantee you could become more and more beautiful every day?
‘What if it was a sexually transmitted disease? In the world of The Beauty, physical perfection is attainable. The vast majority of the population has taken advantage of it, but Detectives Foster and Vaughn will soon discover it comes at a terrible price.’
Across 11 episodes Ashton will play a tech billionaire.

Reflecting on the role, he said, ‘So often today, you only get to play your lane and nothing else, because playing anything else goes against the values that society has projected upon what people should play and shouldn’t play.’
But in the new series he said, ‘We get to play these complicated, nuanced characters. It’s a delight. Playing this character is one of the great delights of my career.’
Shedding light on his character, the father-of-two, who is married to Mila Kunis, remarked, ‘I think he’s a good guy. I mean, you have to learn early that you can’t ever judge your character, because you have people who are doing things… no matter how unfair it is, they think they’re doing the right thing.’
He continued, ‘This character looks at it and he goes, “Wait, there’s a lot of judgment around cosmetic aesthetic improvement in the world. A lot of people judge it.” And gradually over time, people are judging it less.’
