Artists wanted: Shaker Heights offering $5,000 for Lee Road murals

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — The City of Shaker Heights is seeking two artists to create murals in the Chagrin-Lee commercial district as part of the city’s Lee Road transformation plan.

Each selected artist will receive $5,000 for their work.

The project, funded by an Ohio Arts Council’s ArtsRISE grant, seeks experienced visual artists to design the roughly 200-square-foot murals. They will be installed using a heated vinyl process on the buildings along the Lee Road corridor.

The project was included in the city’s Lee Road Action Plan as part of broader recommendations for the city to install public art projects to generate excitement in the Chagrin-Lee district, which is flanked by the Lomond and Moreland neighborhoods.

The artists must lead community engagement efforts between October 2025 and March 2026 that include working directly with neighborhood residents and business owners to ensure the murals reflect the area’s history, culture and diverse population. Each artist must conduct at least two community meetings or design events to gather input.

Artists must be 18 years old and Ohio residents to apply, and must submit a statement of interest, portfolio, resume, digital media links, and information about how they incorporate values of fairness and representation in their work.

The deadline to apply is Aug. 11, 2025.

The Shaker Heights Public Art Task Force will review submissions and invite approximately four artists for virtual interviews on August 26, 2025.

Once designs are approved, the city will handle fabrication and installation between April and June 2026.

Information on how to apply is available on the city’s website.
