Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of a Major League Baseball investigation into sports betting. Clase, a three-time All-Star, becomes the second Guardians pitcher to be placed on leave in connection with a sports gambling probe. Luis Ortiz also is on non-disciplinary leave through Aug. 31. It was unclear if the cases were related in any way. The Guardians said in a statement that they “have been informed that no additional players or club personnel are expected to be impacted.”

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Colorado coach Deion Sanders says he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer but after surgery his oncologist considered him cured. Sanders plans to oversee the Buffaloes this season as he enters his third season at Colorado. Sanders, who turns 58 next month, spoke to the media on the eve of fall camp. He brought his medical team with him to discuss his diagnosis.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred confronted by Bryce Harper during meeting, AP source says

CHICAGO (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred and Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper had a spirited exchange during a question-and-answer session between the commissioner and the team, according to a person with direct knowledge of the conversation. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. Phillies slugger Nick Castellanos previously confirmed some details from the meeting in interviews with The Bandwagon and ESPN. Manfred met with the Phillies and Red Sox during their series last week in Philadelphia. The session with the Phillies lasted for more than an hour.

Summer McIntosh of Canada makes it two gold medals in two days at the world swim championships

SINGAPORE (AP) — Summer McIntosh is off to a perfect start at the swimming world championships with two gold medals in two days. She is attempting to win five individual golds, a feat only achieved by American legend Michael Phelps. The 18-year-old Canadian star took the 200-meter individual medley by clocking 2 minutes 06.69 seconds. The victory matched the gold she won Sunday in the 400 freestyle. Alex Walsh of the United States took silver in 2:08.58 with bronze going to Mary-Sophie Harvey of Canada in 2:09.15. Twelve-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi finished fourth in 2:09.21, just missing a medal as she astounds the swim world with her times.

Jets quarterback Justin Fields returns to team drills at training camp, 4 days after toe injury

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields returned to team drills Monday after dislocating a toe on his right foot last Thursday. Fields participated in 7-on-7 drills Saturday as the team eased him back into practice. Coach Aaron Glenn mentioned Fields still has progress to make before fully returning. After a day off Sunday, Fields ran the offense during 11-on-11 drills, the first day the Jets wore pads this summer. Glenn said Fields was limited in practice but performed well. Fields sent fans into a frenzy last week when he was carted off the field, but tests showed no significant injury.

His career highlights include memorable playoff games like the “Fog Bowl” and the “Tuck Rule” game. Allen says he’s at peace with his Hall of Fame recognition, calling it perfect timing.

Football season looms with no clear guidance in athlete battles to win more eligibility from NCAA

The wave of lawsuits from college athletes seeking another season of eligibility seems to be slowing down. With fall football practice starting this week, players hoping for a judge’s approval to play may be left waiting. Legal expert Sam Ehrlich says it’s likely too late for athletes to file cases and get relief. Judges have provided inconsistent rulings, and the issue might end up in a higher court. Some athletes, like Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, have won their cases. Others remain in limbo. The NCAA wants limited liability protection from Congress to address these eligibility lawsuits.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred acknowledged the current setup isn’t ideal. Players and fans are adjusting to the temporary situation. Meanwhile, Las Vegas is preparing for the A’s arrival, hoping to replicate the success of other sports teams. The move raises questions about the team’s future fan base and success.
