An old way to ride, made new for Sooke – Victoria Taxi plans expansion

Victoria Taxi hopes to bring four cabs and one wheelchair accessible vehicle to Sooke

Sooke may soon have a new way to get in, out and around town.

Victoria Taxi plans to expand into the Sooke region, an area they’ve identified as “underserved” – a sentiment some locals may agree with.

“This strategic move addresses the rising demand for reliable and accessible transportation in the area and aims to provide a superior alternative to the existing limited taxi options,” Victoria Taxi wrote to Sooke council in a letter.

“We are committed to ensuring equitable, round-the-clock service supported by trained local drivers and integrated dispatch technology.”

In its market analysis of the community, Victoria Taxi identified high dependence on personal vehicles, inadequate public transit, and increasing demand for accessible and senior-friendly transport as factors that contributed to the decision to expand into the region.

Presently, Orange Taxi is the only available taxi service in the area.

To begin its expansion, Victoria Taxi will make a plate application to the Passenger Transportation Board to secure approval for four regular taxi plates and one wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) plate in the Sooke area. Their goal is to deploy a fully functional fleet with locally stationed vehicles by fall 2025, operated by “10-plus local drivers, including WAV-certified operators.”

If implemented, service coverage would extend from Kangaroo Road to Port Renfrew. Bookings would be handled through a centralized dispatch and app-based booking system.

“This way, if people need a safe ride, they can get one,” said Sooke Mayor Maja Tait, after council received the letter from Victoria Taxi on June 9.

“With over five decades of experience, a robust operational structure and a deep commitment to safety and accessibility, Victoria Taxi is ready to expand into the Sooke region,” the company stated in its letter to council.

“Our proposal addresses real service gaps and enhances the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. With municipal support and a strong business case, we are confident that this expansion will be a sustainable and community-enhancing initiative.”
