HANNIBAL (WGEM) – American Legion Post 55 hosted its first Veterans Health Fair on Wednesday, giving local veterans and their families a chance to learn about health and support services available to them.
The event introduced attendees to a range of services — including dental care, neurological care and mental health resources — and brought together community providers to answer questions and sign veterans up for care.
Post 55 Commander Maria Poindexter said the fair fills an important need by showing veterans what services are available in the area.
“It means a lot,” Poindexter said. “This is the first time we’ve done something like this. I got the idea after helping with a Tri-State veterans resource fair and thought, ‘We need something like that here in Missouri.'”
Poindexter noted the fair was designed for veterans and their families.
“Even if a veteran can’t attend, a spouse, daughter or other family member can come and learn about these services and pass the information on,” she said. “Sometimes veterans are too proud or hesitant to ask for help, so it takes someone else to connect them with resources.”
For veterans who could not attend, American Legion Post 55 encourages you to reach out to learn more about available benefits and services. Call 573-221-9698 or email [email protected] for information.
