The United Kingdom could face a severe financial crisis if the US government officially confirms the existence of alien life, a former Bank of England expert has warned.
Helen McCaw, who served as a senior analyst in financial security at the Bank for ten years, has urged Governor Andrew Bailey to prepare contingency plans for such an unprecedented scenario.
McCaw, a Cambridge graduate, told The Times that an official disclosure of non-human intelligence could send shockwaves through global markets, potentially triggering bank collapses and civil unrest.
“The United States government appears to be partway through a multi-year process to declassify and disclose information on the existence of a technologically advanced non-human intelligence responsible for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs),” she said, TheTimes reported.
She added, “If the UAP proves to be of non-human origin, we may have to acknowledge the existence of a power or intelligence greater than any government and with potentially unknown intentions.”
McCaw cautioned that governments and central banks might not yet be fully briefed on the issue, warning that public reaction could be swift and severe.
According to McCaw, a disclosure could cause extreme volatility in financial markets.
“There might be extreme price volatility due to catastrophizing or euphoria, and a collapse in confidence if market participants feel uncertain on how to price assets using any of the familiar methods,” she said.
Investors could rush toward traditionally safe assets such as gold, other precious metals, or government bonds.
Conversely, precious metals could lose their status if space-faring technologies suggest a future abundance of these materials.
Digital currencies like bitcoin may also become more attractive if trust in government-backed assets declines.
The warning follows recent statements by senior American officials hinting at the existence of intelligent non-human life.
According to Independent, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the makers of the UFO documentary “The Age of Disclosure” “We’ve had repeated instances of something operating in the airspace over restricted nuclear facilities, and it’s not ours.”
The film also included insights from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, suggesting a long-running effort to study and potentially reverse-engineer advanced technology of unknown origin.
McCaw emphasized the importance of preparedness. “If there is an official announcement and we get presented with very clear evidence that nobody is going to dispute, I would say that in a matter of hours, you are going to have total financial instability,” she said.
“Even if you feel it’s very unlikely, it’s madness not to consider it and plan accordingly.”
While some may view her warnings as extreme, McCaw insists the topic deserves serious attention.
“A lot of friends just think it’s absolutely crazy,” she admitted. “But sadly, there’s just no point in talking to them about it because they won’t even look at the information that’s out there.”
The Bank of England has declined to comment on her recommendations.
