The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) is taking an unusual step in at least two of the upcoming municipal election runoffs on Tuesday.
ALGOP, which has historically stayed nonpartisanartisan municipal elections, is backing candidates in two Hoover City Council races and the Guntersville mayoral election.
In remarks given to 1819 News, party chairman John Wahl confirmed reports of mail pieces sent out in the two cities from ALGOP.
He said in a written statement, “As Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, I am proud to stand behind our conservative candidates at every level of government.”
The party mailers in Hoover say, “The Republican Choices for Hoover City Council are clear!” supporting Ashley Lovell and Gene Smithand.
The Guntersville piece says, “Do you want a Hillary Clinton donor as your mayor?” urging voters to “Just say no to Jeff McLaughlin!”

“Voters deserve to know who the Republican choice is and which candidates are committed to defending their values. We are not shy about fighting for good policy and strong conservative principles, whether it’s in Washington, Montgomery, or at City Hall. When there’s a race with a clear Republican and a clear Democrat, the Alabama GOP will always stand with our Republican candidate,” Wahl said.
While acknowledging that the state party hasn’t typically been involved in municipal races in the past, Wahl explained, “I believe it is critical to change that. Conservatives must be represented — and supported — at every level of government.”
“In recent years, Democrats have increasingly tried to sneak their candidates in nonpartisan city races because they know they can’t win other political offices.”

Democrats are also playing in municipal elections this cycle.
Facebook posts show the party supporting Barbara Drummond in Mobile and McLaughlin in Guntersville.
Wahl said, “They support their candidates and then complain when the Republican Party does the same. I am proud to send a clear message: we are not going to sit back and let the Democrat Party disguise its agenda or steamroll our communities without a fight.”
“The Republican Party is committed to fighting for good government and policies that make our families safer, strengthen our economy, and defend the constitutional rights of every individual. That fight matters just as much in city elections as it does in state and national races.”
