There was no hiding Anthony Albanese’s hubris when he touched down in Australia after his successful meeting with Donald Trump.
The PM gave himself a rockstar-welcome home from Washington, donning a T-shirt featuring English rock band Joy Division as he stepped off the plane at Sydney Airport.
It came after a lightning trip to Washington where his highly anticipated face-to-face with the US president exceeded expectations.
At the White House, Mr Albanese was given the star treatment, including from the President who referred to him as a “friend” and complimented him on doing a “fantastic job as the Prime Minister”.
The duo successfully signed a critical minerals deal and committed to the ongoing AUKUS pact.
The trip went off without a hitch beyond an awkward moment with Australia’s ambassador Kevin Rudd and when his flight home had to be diverted due to a medical emergency with a crew member.
It’s not the first time Mr Albanese has worn band shirts on international trips, with previous travelling parties understood to have copped his grumbles about having to change into a suit to exit the plane.
While Mr Albanese exuded hubris on home soil as he returned, he won’t have a chance when Parliament resumes next week in Canberra. The PM will again be in the air to attend the upcoming APEC and ASEAN summits in Asia.
Mr Albanese’s more casual appearance on the tarmac from his RAAF plane was, however, soon met with chaos when the PM returned to Kirribilli House where a man’s behaviour drew a large police presence.
The man was spoken to and patted down by officers before he was taken from the scene to hospital by ambulance.
